Eligibility

Veterans of the U.S. Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, or Texas National Guard with an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions.

Acceptable proof of service

DD-214, DD-215, NGB-22, VA disability letter, or a Texas LTC/CHL with veteran designation.

Benefit

The word "VETERAN" is printed on your Texas driver license or state ID. This can be used as proof of veteran status for discounts and services.

Cost

Free when added at original issuance, renewal, or other change to the license. If added to an existing license OUTSIDE one of those events, a duplicate-license fee applies.

How to get it

The designation must initially be added in person at a Texas DPS office (it cannot be added during online renewal alone). Once on file, it carries through future online renewals.

Always confirm current rates and rules with the Texas state agency before applying.
