About this benefit

Note

Since September 1, 2021 (HB 1927, Firearm Carry Act of 2021), Texas is a permitless (constitutional) carry state. Any person 21+ who can legally possess a firearm may carry concealed or openly without a license. The LTC remains optional but is useful for carry reciprocity in other states, faster NICS checks when purchasing firearms, and carrying in some locations that otherwise restrict unlicensed carry.

Eligibility

Active-duty military members receive a full fee waiver ($0) for both new and renewal applications. Honorably discharged veterans pay the standard $25 fee (same as civilians, after the 2021 fee restructuring).

How to apply

Apply for your LTC through the Texas DPS website and provide military ID or DD-214.
