Florida Veteran Benefits: Complete 2026 Guide
Florida combines no state income tax with strong property tax exemptions and education benefits for veterans. Here is every benefit you should know about.
Why Florida Is a Top State for Veterans
Florida is one of the most veteran-friendly states in the country. With no state income tax, generous property tax exemptions, strong education benefits, and a large veteran community, it is no surprise that Florida has the third-largest veteran population in the nation.
Property Tax Exemptions
Florida offers several levels of property tax relief for veterans:
- 100% permanently and totally (P&T) disabled veterans receive a full property tax exemption on their homestead. This applies to the full assessed value of the home.
- Veterans with a 10% or higher rating receive a $5,000 reduction in assessed value of their homestead.
- Veterans 65 or older with a combat-related disability may qualify for additional exemptions.
- Surviving spouses of veterans who died from service-connected causes receive a full exemption, as long as they do not remarry.
The full exemption for P&T veterans is extremely valuable in Florida, where property values and tax rates can result in annual tax bills of $5,000 to $15,000 or more.
No State Income Tax
Florida is one of nine states with no state income tax. This means military retirement pay, VA disability compensation, and all other income are completely free from state income tax. For veterans with military retirement, this can save thousands per year compared to states that tax retirement income.
Education Benefits
Florida offers several education benefits for veterans and their families:
- Out-of-state tuition fee waiver for honorably discharged veterans using GI Bill benefits at state institutions
- Purple Heart/Combat-Related Special Compensation recipients may qualify for tuition waivers
- Dependent children of deceased or disabled veterans may receive free tuition through the Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans program
Additional Florida Benefits
- Free DV license plates with no annual registration fee
- Free hunting and fishing licenses for veterans rated 50% or higher
- Free state park entry for disabled veterans
- Veterans preference in state, county, and city government hiring
- Free driver license and ID card for veterans with 100% P&T disability (or FDVA card holders)
Florida Veterans Homes
Florida operates several state veterans nursing homes and assisted living facilities. These provide long-term care at reduced costs for eligible veterans.
