What Changes at Each VA Disability Rating
Your VA disability rating unlocks different benefits at each level. Here is a complete breakdown from 0% through 100% so you know exactly what you qualify for.
Your Rating Is More Than Just a Number
Your VA disability rating determines not only your monthly compensation amount but also which benefits doors open for you. Many veterans do not realize that certain thresholds unlock entirely new categories of support.
0% Rating (Service-Connected)
A 0% rating might sound like nothing, but it is actually significant. It means the VA has acknowledged your condition is service-connected, even if it is not currently severe enough for compensation. With a 0% rating you still get:
- VA healthcare enrollment (Priority Group 5)
- Service-connected treatment at VA facilities at no cost for that condition
- Veterans preference for federal employment (5 points)
- Access to VA home loan benefit
Many veterans stop pursuing their claim when they hear 0%, not realizing the access it provides.
10% to 20% Rating
At 10%, you begin receiving monthly tax-free compensation. As of 2026, a single veteran at 10% receives approximately $175 per month. At 20%, that increases to around $348. Additional benefits at this level include:
- Property tax reductions in many states
- Free or reduced hunting and fishing licenses in several states
- Access to VA vocational rehabilitation (Chapter 31) if you have an employment barrier
30% to 40% Rating
The 30% threshold is a major milestone. This is where the VA begins adding compensation for dependents, including your spouse, children, and dependent parents. Your monthly payment increases meaningfully.
At 30% you also gain: - Commissary and exchange shopping privileges - Dependent additions to monthly compensation - Additional state-level benefits in many states - 10-point federal hiring preference (at 30%+)
50% to 60% Rating
At 50%, compensation rises substantially and more state benefits become available. Many states begin offering free vehicle registration, additional property tax exemptions, or free state park access at the 50% threshold.
70% to 90% Rating
Veterans rated at 70% or higher often qualify for: - Chapter 35 Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) for family members - Increased state-level benefits - Higher priority for VA healthcare (Priority Group 1) - Additional property tax exemptions in many states
At 80% and 90%, monthly compensation continues to climb. A single veteran at 90% receives over $2,200 per month.
100% Disability Rating
The 100% rating is the most significant threshold. Whether it is a schedular 100% or Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU), this rating unlocks the full spectrum of benefits:
- Maximum monthly compensation (over $3,700 for a single veteran in 2026)
- Full dental and vision care through the VA
- CHAMPVA healthcare for your spouse and dependents
- Property tax exemption in most states (full exemption in many)
- Free vehicle registration in many states
- Space-Available military flights
- Commissary and exchange access
- Many states waive fees for drivers licenses, license plates, and more
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
Beyond 100%, the VA offers Special Monthly Compensation for veterans with specific severe disabilities such as loss of limb, blindness, or the need for Aid and Attendance. SMC rates can significantly exceed the 100% base rate.
