About this benefit
Eligibility
Applicant must be under age 25, a NC resident, and the child of a veteran whose qualifying condition occurred during a wartime period. Classes:
- Class I-A: Parent died in wartime service or from service-connected condition
- Class I-B: Parent rated 100% disabled by VA due to wartime service
- Class II: Parent rated 20%-99% disabled or awarded Purple Heart
- Class III: Parent receiving VA pension for total/permanent disability, or served in combat zone
- Class IV: Parent was POW or MIA
Veteran parent must have been a NC legal resident at entry into service, OR the child was born in NC and has been a continuous resident.
Deadlines
Class II/III = February 14; Classes I-A, I-B, IV = June 1 or December 1.

Up to 8 academic semesters of tuition/fees at approved NC colleges and universities (8-year time limit).
Note
Program faces funding limitations as of 2026. Spring 2026 awards were prorated to 25% of Fall 2025 amounts. The January 2026 new applicant portal is not anticipated to open unless additional General Assembly funding is appropriated.
