Eligibility
Veterans (honorable discharge, with DD-214 documentation), widows/widowers of veterans, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans. Active-duty military members within 6 months of separation also qualify. Voluntary program. Applies only to open (not promotional) examinations. Not available after achieving permanent civil service status.
How it works
Per California Government Code §18973.1, an eligible veteran who passes an entrance exam (minimum score 70) is ranked in the top rank of the resulting eligibility list. Does not guarantee an interview or hire — applicants still compete through the full hiring process.
