Who qualifies
- Requires 10%+ VA disability rating
- Texas residency
Details
Eligibility
Must have a VA disability rating of 10-29%. Must own and occupy the property as your homestead.
Exemption
$5,000 is deducted from the assessed value of your home for property tax purposes.
How it works
If your home is assessed at $300,000, you pay taxes on $295,000 instead.
How to apply
File an application at your county appraisal district office. Provide your VA disability rating letter and proof of homestead. Must apply by April 30 for that tax year, but late applications may be accepted.
Note
You receive the HIGHEST exemption you qualify for — they do not stack. If your rating increases, update your appraisal district.
Note
Veterans age 65+ with a 10%+ disability rating, those who are totally blind, or those who have lost use of one or more limbs from a service-connected injury qualify for the maximum $12,000 exemption regardless of disability rating percentage.
Always confirm current rates and rules with the Texas state agency before applying.
