Note

Federal Vet Centers (counseling for combat veterans + family) are operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, NOT the State of New York. The New York State Division of Veterans' Services (DVS) provides benefits advising and connects veterans to Vet Center counseling — the two are separate.

Eligibility

Any veteran may access services through the New York State DVS regardless of discharge status or disability rating. Services are also available to family members and survivors.

Covers

Benefits claims assistance, crisis management, discharge upgrade help, incarcerated-veterans programs, mental health and PTSD resources, employment, housing, education referrals, and referrals to federal Vet Centers for mental health/readjustment counseling and substance abuse treatment. DVS operates 112 Veterans Services Offices statewide organized by county.

How to access

Schedule an appointment with the New York State DVS at 1-888-838-7697 or use the searchable office directory at veterans.ny.gov to find a Veterans Benefits Advisor near you. Veterans Crisis Line: dial 988 then press 1.

Always confirm current rates and rules with the New York state agency before applying.
