What is Space-Available Travel?

Space-Available Travel is a federal transportation benefit for veterans. Eligible for Space-A military flights (100% P&T). Requires 100%+ VA disability rating.

Who qualifies

Veterans
  • Requires 100%+ VA disability rating

How to apply

Contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000 for application instructions.

Who is eligible

Eligibility

Must be rated 100% permanent and total (P&T). Dependents CAN accompany the veteran sponsor (per FY2021 NDAA / DoD policy update), but cannot travel Space-A without the sponsor present.

What Space-Available Travel covers

How to sign up

Register at the passenger terminal of a military air base. You can sign up in person or online through some terminals. A DD Form 2765 (Tan ID card) — being replaced by the Next Generation USID card — is required to travel and to register at terminals.

Priority

Categories I–VI (Roman numerals per DoD). 100% P&T veterans and accompanying dependents are in Category VI, the lowest priority — they board only after all higher-category travelers are accommodated.

Tips

Be flexible with dates and destinations. Popular routes fill up fast. Bring food and entertainment as flights can be long with no amenities.

How to apply for Space-Available Travel

How it works

You can fly on military aircraft on a space-available basis. Travel is available within CONUS and direct flights between CONUS and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa — no foreign-country travel allowed. Flights are free but not guaranteed — you fly only when there are empty seats.
