Note
The S-DVI program closed to new applications on December 31, 2022. It has been replaced by Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife).
VALife eligibility
Must have a service-connected disability rating (even 0%). Veterans age 80 or younger have no time limit to apply. Veterans age 81 or older are eligible only if they applied for VA disability compensation before turning 81, received their rating after turning 81, AND apply for VALife within 2 years of receiving that rating notification.
Coverage
Up to $40,000 in increments of $10,000.
Premiums
Based on age at application and coverage amount; locked in for life and never increase. Guaranteed acceptance with no medical underwriting. There is a 2-year waiting period for full coverage. If the veteran dies during the waiting period, the beneficiary receives premiums paid plus interest. Note: VALife does not offer premium waivers (unlike the older S-DVI program).
How to apply
Apply online at va.gov/life-insurance/options-eligibility/valife/.
Always confirm current rates and rules on VA.gov before applying — eligibility rules and dollar amounts change with each fiscal year.
