VA Dental Benefits: Who Qualifies and How to Apply in 2026

VA dental care is one of the most misunderstood benefits. Most veterans do not qualify for routine dental, but several groups do. Here is who and how.

Most Veterans Do Not Get VA Dental Care

This is the reality that surprises many veterans. Unlike VA medical care, which is available to most enrolled veterans, VA dental benefits are limited to specific eligibility groups. If you are not in one of those groups, the VA will not cover routine dental care.

Who Qualifies for Full VA Dental Benefits

100% Disability Rating: Veterans rated at 100% service-connected disability (including TDIU) qualify for comprehensive dental care at no cost. This includes preventive care, cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, root canals, and oral surgery.

Service-Connected Dental Condition: If you have a dental condition that is directly connected to your military service and rated by the VA, you qualify for treatment of that specific condition.

Former Prisoners of War: Veterans who were POWs qualify for comprehensive dental care regardless of disability rating.

Veterans with 100% due to Unemployability (TDIU): TDIU recipients receive the same dental benefits as schedular 100% rated veterans.

Limited Dental Benefits

Recently Discharged Veterans: If you were discharged within the last 180 days, you may be eligible for a one-time course of dental care. You must apply within 180 days of discharge.

Dental conditions aggravating a service-connected medical condition: If your dental health is making a service-connected medical condition worse, the VA may provide treatment.

Veterans in VA vocational rehabilitation: Those enrolled in a VA vocational rehab program may qualify if dental treatment is needed to complete the program.

The VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP)

For veterans who do not qualify for free VA dental care, the VA offers VADIP, a discounted dental insurance program. It is not free, but premiums are lower than most commercial dental plans. You can enroll if you are enrolled in VA healthcare.

VADIP covers preventive care, basic restorative procedures, and some specialty services. Monthly premiums typically range from $12 to $55 depending on the plan and coverage level.

How to Apply

If you believe you qualify for VA dental benefits, contact your local VA medical center dental clinic or call the VA health benefits hotline at 1-877-222-VETS. You can also apply through VA.gov.

For VADIP enrollment, visit the VA dental insurance page on VA.gov and choose from the available insurance providers.
