Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive (MERIT)
Tuition + room/board supplement for children, spouses, and financial dependents of service members who died or became severely disabled during military service.

Eligibility
Child, spouse, or financial dependent of a US Armed Forces or state-organized militia member who died from injury or illness during military duties (combat or non-combat) OR became severely and permanently disabled while performing military duties. Active service members who became severely and permanently disabled also qualify. The qualifying service member must have been a New York State resident at the time of death or disability. Student attends an approved NYS undergraduate institution.
Covers
A supplement that, combined with other educational aid, covers cost of attendance not to exceed the average cost of attendance charged to NYS resident students at a state-operated SUNY college (tuition, room and board, books, supplies, and allowances). Duration: up to 2 years (associate degree), 4 years (bachelor's), or 5 years (approved 5-year programs).
How to apply
Apply through HESC at hesc.ny.gov. Complete the FAFSA and TAP application first, then submit the MERIT Scholarship web supplement with required documentation (disability verification, proof of relationship, enrollment verification).
