Eligibility

Per Florida statute 196.24, veteran disabled to a degree of 10% or more by misfortune OR while serving during wartime; honorable discharge; Florida resident.

Covers

$5,000 reduction from the assessed taxable value of any property owned by the veteran. This exemption is NOT limited to homestead property — it applies to any property the veteran owns. Dollar savings depend on local millage rate (typically $50-$100/year).

Surviving spouse

The exemption may carry over to the surviving spouse per s. 196.24.

How to apply

Apply at your county Property Appraiser's office by March 1 of the tax year. Provide DD-214 and VA disability letter.
