About this benefit

Eligibility

Honorably discharged veteran with VA service-connected disability rating of 50% or greater. Veterans with Individual Unemployability (TDIU) paid at 100% also qualify. Unremarried surviving spouses of qualifying veterans are eligible; surviving spouses receiving DIC receive the full 100% credit.

Covers

Credit equal to the veteran's disability percentage applied against the first $9,000 of taxable valuation of the homestead. ($9,000 taxable value corresponds to approximately $200,000 true and full value at the standard 4.5% residential assessment ratio.) For a 100% rated veteran, this effectively eliminates property tax on that portion.

Residency

Must own and occupy the property as a homestead in North Dakota.

How to apply

File an affidavit with the county auditor by April 1 (verify current deadline with your county auditor), along with DD-214 and VA disability certification letter.

Verified against official source

Last checked 2026-05-06 against www.tax.nd.gov. Always confirm current rates and rules with the North Dakota state agency before applying.
