Eligibility
50% or more permanent service-connected disability rating, OR loss/loss of use of one or both feet or hands, OR permanent visual impairment/blindness. Honorable discharge required. One vehicle per veteran.
Note
A Disabled Veteran license plate is not required to claim the exemption — qualifying veterans who choose another plate type (e.g., Purple Heart, branch-specific) can still claim the ownership tax and registration fee exemption at the county motor vehicle office with eligibility documentation. Veterans rated below 50% who qualify through loss of limbs or blindness cannot be automatically identified by disability rating alone; contact your county clerk or County Motor Vehicle Office directly.
Covers
Exemption from vehicle registration fees and ownership (specific ownership) tax on one passenger vehicle, truck (under 16,000 lbs empty weight), noncommercial/recreational vehicle, motor home, or motorcycle.
How to apply
County Motor Vehicle Office. Requires VA qualification letter (eligibility letter from the Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs confirming rating, service connection, and permanence) and DD-214 showing honorable discharge.
Always confirm current rates and rules with the Colorado state agency before applying.
